05 Feb Multi-Sensor Core Logging Offshore Brazil
Geotek has been busy working aboard the MV Sable, offshore Brazil, for the past 14 months providing offshore Multi-Sensor Core Logger (MSCL) scanning within our mobile container laboratory. The MSCL analysis was performed on seabed samples acquired from the seabed drill PROD, operated alongside Benthic LLC, for Petrobras’ continued developments in the Santos, Campos, and Sergipe-Alagoas Basins. During this time, three projects were completed by our specialist team, consisting of geologists from both Geotek and Bratexco, our exclusive Brazilian distributors. Core samples were immediately and non-destructively scanned following sample retrieval on deck.
Throughout the course of these projects Geotek have logged approximately 3400 m of whole plastic and aluminium lined sediment core samples non-destructively, acquiring attenuated gamma density, porosity, water content, ultrasonic P-wave velocity, magnetic susceptibility, non-contact electrical resistivity and total natural gamma. All of these sensor systems output real-time data to provide a quantified geological stratigraphy that is processed in and data fed back to our client in real time to help guide the sub-sampling programme.
After logging 109 boreholes extending to depths of 100 m below mudline, the project is now drawing to a close. The data the MSCL-S collected during this 14 month offshore campaign are now being used as one of the inputs in the next phase of geotechnical and geological studies for the design of offshore foundation layout, geohazard assessment and foundation design.
