Geotek Win X-ray and Age Dating Project

Geotek Win X-ray and Age Dating Project

Geotek Ltd (Geotek) were awarded a geohazard (visual) core logging, MSCL, X-ray and age dating project from Geoquip Marine, for the EMEPRL project offshore eastern Europe. We offer a bespoke core logging facility with a professional team of multi-disciplined geoscientists, sharing expertise in sedimentology, geological, geophysical and geotechnical interpretation. Along with the capability of visual core description for geohazard projects and associated age dating, our logging facility is equipped with the latest Geotek multi-sensor core logging technology for the non-destructive analysis of sediment and rock core. This includes our cabinet-based X-ray Computed Tomography (XCT) systems, Multi-Sensor Core Logger (MSCL), visible and ultraviolet line-scan core photography, and spectral analysis including colour and hyperspectral near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) core scanning.

Geotek’s Core Logging Laboratory

Geotek provide a unique service for geohazard and geological logging projects, integrating into one process. This process consists of visual core logging with X-ray radiography or X-ray CT and MSCL, to provide a classification of the site-wide soil conditions, investigate the sedimentological evidence for geohazards and generate a targeted framework for a geological testing programme. The geological testing programme is achieved through either in house testing of grain-size (laser diffractometry) and specialist subcontractors for radiometric and biostratigraphic age dating, or mineralogical testing such as SEM/XRD. Combining non-destructive datasets from MSCL and X-ray with the standard visual core logging ensures the suitable selection of material for geological and age dating testing. The amalgamation characterises both the visually observable and hidden structures within the core, such as sedimentological structure or artificial disturbance, enhancing the material selection and logging process.

Briony Shreeve, Geotek’s Lead Geoscientist says “It is excellent to be working with Geoquip and EMEPRL on this exciting oil and gas development prospect. Over the last few years we have been building our core logging laboratory to allow our customers to benefit from Geotek’s > 20 years of experience in core logging technology. The lab now offers a complete range of core logging services, including high resolution cross-polarised photography and quantitative colour assessment which are perfect accompaniments for geohazard core logging projects.”

As well as conducting core logging operations in our laboratory in Daventry, UK, Geotek can accommodate for both onshore and offshore core logging activities within our fleet of 20ft mobile containerised laboratories. The Geotek containerised laboratories sited in Texas, USA, Perth Australia, and Europe typically house XCT and MSCL systems, but can be flexible dependent on the project requirements.
