Standard X-ray CT System (XCT)

Standard X-ray CT System

Visualise a core’s internal structure with X-ray Imaging

The versatile Geotek XCT system allows for the acquisition of both 2D X-ray transmission images and full 3D helical X-ray CT volumes of core samples through horizontal scanning techniques. The system is available with a 130 kV or 180 kV microfocus closed X-ray source to meet different industry needs and core types. Whether lined whole core, split core, or slabbed core sections, the XCT’s flexible geometry allows for scanning cores of varying diameters. Adjustable X-ray source and detector positions can be optimised for image quality, resolution and core size.

How it works

Samples are loaded horizontally into one of the cabinet arms inside of an X-ray tube and centralised by wirelessly controlled motorised arms. The core sample translates through the centre cabinet past a fixed source and detector position that the user has selected, and can be rotated under computer control to examine internal structures at various angles. The flexibility of the source and detector positions allows the user to achieve a voxel/pixel resolution between 30 µm and 350 µm on the XCT.

DATA ACQUISITION AND PROVIDED SOFTWARE – ROTATING CORE

The XCT system rotates the core sample to create the three-dimensional data set. Core can be rotated under manual or computer control to examine structures or collect rotational movies. Core rotation allows visualisation of three-dimensional features by the operator and choice of optimum scanning orientation.

  • Geotek X-ray acquisition software – allows the operator to set-up their scan parameters and acquire data with real-time visualisation.
  • Geotek GQuickView software – allows the user to view and manipulate the X-ray radiographs and CT slabs.
  • Geotek CTQuickView software – allows the user to view and manipulate stacked tiff image sequences to create orthogonal and unwrapped slabs
  • Geotek Reconstructor software – allows the user to reconstruct using helical or circular reconstruction recipes and view the core slices or generate orthogonal slabs.
