MSCL-CIS

The Geotek Single Track Core Imaging System (MSCL-CIS) can be used in two modes, either with an areascan imaging device or the Geoscan linescan imaging system. The imaging systems are transported along the stationary core section driven by a ball screw drive mechanism giving very high precision movement which when combined with the low distortion cameras available with the MSCL-CIS lead to exceptionally high quality images.

The areascan and linescan cameras operate in very similar ways where the camera and light assembly move over each uncovered core section collecting an image of each core section as they move. The linescan imaging system collects a section image in a continuous movement whereas the areascan imaging system collects a series of images along the core section that are subsequently stitched together to form a core section image.

Geoscan IV linescan imaging
This versatile system consists of a custom built 3x 2048 CCD line scan imaging system. The camera design and calibration protocols ensures that colour from each CCD array is fully defined. Image resolution depends on core width but typically is about 300 dpi (dots per inch) for a 75 mm diameter core. Resolutions of up to 1000 dpi can be achieved on narrow sections from the core if required. Data from each colour channel (at 8 bit depth) enables down core RGB profiles with down core resolutions typically around 0.1mm making fine scale analysis of varved sediments a reality. Imaging speed is approximately 5 mins per 1.5m core section.

Colour dual areascan imaging system
This system consists of two 5 mega pixel area cameras (frame size of 2588x1958) with circular LED light arrays. The firewire interface on these cameras allows rapid data collection at up to 12 bit colour depth resolution (per channel). Full software control on the LED light array allows a certain amount of aperture control on the camera. The two cameras permit near full circumferential images to be acquired that can be illumination and geometry corrected in software to provide structural orientation data.

All of the camera acquisition and movement is controlled by custom built Geotek imaging software producing images in bitmap (BMP) or tagged image file format (TIFF) files that can be used in many other proprietary software packages. Geotek also has available its ImageTools software that provides many of the tools required for handling and manipulating images of cores and core sections.
