Core imaging for BP

On the 4th December, Peter and Melanie visited Anchorage in Alaska to image sediment cores for British petroleum. The Sediment cores were extracted from the North Slope of Alaska as part of a DOE funded hydrate project.

About 430 feet of core was recovered from one drillsite called Milne Point on the slope back in February 2007. Individual cylindrical sections measuring 3 feet in length and approx 3 inches in diameter were transported back for temporary storage in Anchorage. Here they were split and then imaged using the MSCL-CIS system to provide a detailed and non destructive record of the core surfaces. From here, the samples shall be distributed to gas hydrate researchers around the United States for further analysis.
