MSCL-S #103 Installation

17th April 2008

On the 17th April Peter visited the Universidade Federal Fluminense in Niterói (Rio De Janeiro), Brasil to install MSCL-S #103. Several days were spent training staff and students in the use of the MSCL-S and discussing how the new core data obtained will help their research programs.

MSCL-S #101 Installation

24th March 2008

On the 24th March Peter visited Brown University to install MSCL-S #101.

The core logger with gamma density and magnetic susceptibility sensors was installed in the Geological Sciences department of the University along with a Geoscan IV Linescan Imaging system.

Chikyu Installation

17th March 2008

On the 17th March Peter and John arrived on the Japanese drillship Chikyu. During their week long visit they performed various upgrades to Geotek equipment already on board the vessel, and installed new equipment and trained Marine Works Japan staff in its use.

The upgrades included the addition of a natural gamma system to the MSCL-S used for logging split cores, and a Geoscan IV Linescan Imaging system for use on the MSCL-XYZ.

Installation of MSCL#102

18th February 2008

On the 18th Feb, John visited the Geography department at the University of Western Ontario to install MSCL-S #102.

The logger is a complete standard system with Gamma, P-wave, Electrical resistivity and Magnetic susceptibility sensors. In addition to these sensors, the Geoscan IV Linescan Imaging imaging camera has also been installed.

Primarily the logger will be used to measure the physical properties of lake sediments whilst the camera will provide a permanent visual record of the cores, as well as R,G and B colour profiles.

Korean Post Cruise Analysis

8th February 2008

On January 21st Peter and Melanie joined scientists from the Korean Institute of Geology, Mining and Materials (KIGAM) and took the 7 remaining pressure cores retrieved from the UBGH expedition back in Oct 2007, to a local hospital for CT scanning. From Feb 8th-20th, Peter and Melanie teamed up with a science and engineering group from Georgia Tech and Lehigh University to perform some post cruise analysis on the pressure cores.
